Because I’m ‘spossed-ta

I suppose the thing you do when you blog about resolutions is to do an update post on how it all worked out.  So here goes:

Winter Break Resolutions Update (break ended 1/4 for me, so this is late)

Resolution: Exercise 2-4 times per week (EA Active on the Wii!)

Result: HA!  Did zero exercising over break.  I have the hardest time prioritizing this, meaning I guess it’s just not that important to me.  But then this weekend I went clothes shopping and got annoyed at my size and exercised.  Here’s hoping I’ve found my motivation and will keep it up.  Still sore from exercising 2 days ago.  Also someone pointed out that since I’m a student now I should be able to use the fancy new gym at my university for free.  Getting around to that.

Resolution: Spend an hour 2-4 times per week on serious cleaning/organizing of apartment (with Adam)

Result: Again, ha.  I didn’t do any of this, until the Sunday night before classes were starting again when I went through a huge pile of random paperwork/mail looking for my passport, but couldn’t find it.  Also went through more random stuff today but still no passport.  Looks like I’m going to have to get a new one. But again, while I’d really like to get my apartment super organized, in the grand scheme of things I am not very motivated on this one.

Resolution: Get caught up on emails/meetings/organization for my consulting student org

Result: I actually did a pretty decent job on this one (see, I do have priorities).  Of course there’s always more that I’d like to do, but I did definitely get a lot done over break and the consulting group is progressing pretty nicely.  I’m especially excited about having a leadership team in place that actually have great ideas of their own and make stuff happen with minimal involvement from me.  I think—this is what it must feel like to manage a good team instead of a dysfunctional inherited one.  Sometimes when I’m working on something for the group, it’s my reason for getting out of bed in the morning, and I think—this must be what it feels like to love your job.  I’ll get there some day.

Resolution: Read (like, for pleasure, sorta)

Result: I read one book—The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Jose Saramago.  I’m a big Saramago fan, and this didn’t disappoint.  I got a bunch of awesome pleasure or semi-pleasure reading books for Christmas (by request) that I really want to make the time to read. Eventually.

Not a resolution but in a similar vein.  A little over a week ago I got one of those lights that simulate sunlight for people who have Seasonal Affective Disorder.  I’ve never been diagnosed, but I’m sure if I went to a psychiatrist I would be.  It has been helping IMMENSELY.  I almost think that if I’d gotten it earlier I would have gotten even more done over break.  I’d been thinking about doing this for years, but one of the big things that dissuaded me (other than the cost of the light) was that you have to get up early to do it in the morning.  But it’s only a half hour and I’ve been pretty good about it because I know that doing it helps.  I really highly recommend it to anyone who struggles with depression and loss of energy in the winter.
